The Lonely and Coldest Inhabited Place On Earth-Oymyakon Russia

Oymyakon is a tiny hamlet in the Yakutia region of Russia, Known as the coldest inhabited place on Earth. This part of Russia is that part of our world where people suffer to survive almost every day. The temperature in Oymyakon goes down below zero during most part of the year and the average Oymyakon temperature in the town falls to -58 degrees Celsius in the winter. Oymyakon Siberia town has nearly  500 residents.

Oymyakon Russia is situated about 750 meters above sea level and is a lovely village that has only one shop. People living in this arctic cold town Oymyakon are known as Yakutians. they have managed to come up with a variety of spectacular tricks to survive in this harsh weather.

The meaning of Oymyakon in Russian is “water that doesn’t freeze.” This is due to the thermal spring located nearby. The settlement was established in the 1920s when the winter herders take water for their reindeer at a thermal spring and thought it would be ideal for them to settle in.

Oymyakon is a rural village in the Oymyakonsky District of the Oymyakon Sakha Republic, Russia. It is located in the Yana-Oymyakon Highlands, along the Indigirka River, 30 km northwest of Tomtor. Oymyakon has two main valleys. These valleys trap wind inside the town and create a cold climate. The temperatures here are extremely cold for most of the year, and snowfall occurs frequently in spring and autumn, but rarely in summer and winter.

There is a time when the temperature reaches a point where the brain goes freeze, people keep the engines of their vehicles running 24/7 and eat heavy meat to keep alive themselves and this is the time to plan a trip to Oymyakon.  Because of the intense cold human brains work quite differently; they have some interesting tricks to survive the cold in Oymyakon.

The Crops do not grow on this frozen land, so the Yakutians survive on a carnivorous diet.  The foods that are consumed are including raw flesh, reindeer meat, long-sliced frozen fish, and frozen horse liver. Another diet of the place is ice cubes made using horse blood and served with macaroni.

Oymyakon is the coldest inhabited place on earth, but it’s not as cold and freezing as the spot of land in Antarctica. Here the temperatures dip as low as -133 degrees Fahrenheit on a regular day. The cold sometimes gets so unbearable that your eyelashes will freeze into ice and have painful needles on your face as you walk down Oymyakon street.

This remote village of Oymyakon in Russia is closer to the Arctic Circle and north of the Sea of Okhotsk. A monument statue of a huge bull was established in the centre of town. it memorializes the day in 1924 when the temperature fell to a record-breaking -71.2 degrees Celsius. However, The Oymyakon’s coldest temperature recorded an all-time low of minus-98 degrees in 2013.

Things to do in Oymyakon

Oymyakon town hosts the “Cold Pole Festival,” which is hosted by Chyskhaan and celebrated by whole Yakutians residents. They invite the whole world into his fabulous festivals every year in March for reindeer races, dog sledging, ice fishing, and other interesting activities that all locals participate in.

How to get Oymyakon

To get to Oymyakon, you can take a flight from Moscow to Yakutsk and follow it with a two-day drive and an overnight stay in Tyoply Kluch.  And once you’re here, the nearest airport to Oymyakon, the prospect of reaching the place is awesome.
