Avery Island, Louisiana

Avery Island, historically known in French as Île Petite Anse, is a notable salt dome widely recognized as the birthplace of Tabasco hot sauce. It is located in Iberia Parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana, about three miles (4.8 km) inland from Vermilion Bay, which opens into the Gulf of Mexico. A small population lives on the island, and the area is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Location

Avery Island is surrounded by bayous—slow-moving, muddy waterways—as well as extensive salt marshes and swampland. It lies roughly 210 km west of New Orleans in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Historically, the island functioned as a sugar plantation and was once known as Petite Anse Island, a Cajun French name meaning “Little Cove.”

The island reaches a maximum elevation of about 50 m above mean sea level and covers approximately 2,200 acres, measuring about 4 km across at its widest point.

Geology

Avery Island is actually a large salt dome made of rock salt. It was formed when ancient evaporite (salt) deposits beneath the Mississippi River Delta region slowly pushed upward through the surrounding sedimentary layers. These geological formations are known as salt domes.

Avery Island is one of five salt dome “islands” that rise above the otherwise flat landscape of the Louisiana Gulf Coast. Arranged from northwest to southeast, the five islands are Jefferson Island, Avery Island, Weeks Island, Cote Blanche Island, and Belle Isle.

Tour admission is $15.50 for adults, $12.50 for children over four years old, and $13.95 for seniors and veterans.

Just half a mile away is the stunning Jungle Gardens, a beautiful nature preserve also established by the McIlhenny family. Guests can wander through lush gardens, see a remarkable 900-year-old Buddha statue, and explore Bird City, a sanctuary that hosts thousands of protected snowy white egrets and other wildlife. Before leaving the island, many visitors like to snap a selfie with Monsurat, known as the largest alligator ever spotted on Avery Island

How to reach Avery Island, Louisiana

Avery Island, Louisiana, home to the Tabasco factory and Jungle Gardens, is accessible by car, located about 2.5 hours from New Orleans, 1.5 hours from Baton Rouge, and 30-40 minutes from Lafayette. Take I-10 to US-90 W near Lafayette, then Highway 329 South to the gated entrance.
