Madagascar Geology

Madagascar-Country in east Africa comprises a variety of rocks of the Precambrian age which make up the larger part of the east and center of the island. They are intruded by basalts and rhyolites of the Mesozoic to Cenozoic age. The western part of the island is formed from sedimentary rocks of the Carboniferous to Quaternary age. Archean rocks occur in the northeast portion of the island down to the south in the Ranotsara shear zone. Rocks in the northern portion of Madagascar are greenstone belts, from the Archean or Paleoproterozoic age.

Madagascar has developed its own distinct ecosystems and extraordinary wildlife since it split from the African continent an estimated 160 million years ago. The island nation is home to a wide variety of unique plants and animals and is considered one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Lac Tritriva

Lake Tritriva is a volcanic lake in southwest-central Madagascar, located near the village of Belazao. It is a distance of 15 km from Antsirabe and easy to reach by National Road 34. The lake fills an extinct crater in a region and is also known for the presence of many hot springs. The lake sits in the vent of an oval volcanic cone enclosed in vertical gneiss cliffs. The rim of the cone is about 2,000 m above sea level, while the surface of the lake is approximately 50 m below the rim.

Avenue Of  The Baobabs

Dozens of rare and ancient baobab trees are distributed on the dirt road on the west coast of Madagascar linking Morondava and Belo Tsiribihina. It creates so beautiful and unique scenery that it may become the country’s first official natural monument. These giant, dry season-deciduous trees, many of which are more than 800 years old with trunks that are over 45 meters in height. due to the encroachment of modern civilization and increasing populations the remaining baobabs stand in relative isolation. Antananarivo

Antananarivo is situated approximately 1,280 m above sea level in the Central Highlands region of Madagascar. The city has a summit and slopes of a long, narrow, rocky ridge extending north and south for about 4 km and rising to about 200 m above the extensive rice fields to the west.

Ankarafantsika National Park

Ankarafantsika National Park is located in northwestern Madagascar in the Ambato Boeny region. It is located 420 km north of Antananarivo and 115 km west of Mahajanga. A vast area that combines deciduous forest, savannah, and wetland. Ankarafantsika Nature Reserve is one of Madagascar’s largest parks. The area is a birdlife haven and a large number of visitors come here for birdwatching. The national park area has lakes, canyons, and savannahs. The protected area was officially declared a national park in 2003 and Parts of the national park comes under Ramsar Conservation Area, initiated by the WWF.

Isalo National Park

Isalo National Park is home to some of Madagascar’s most stunning scenery. it is also a sacred place for the Bara tribe, whose burial sites are marked by mounds of tiny stones. Hiking up to the massif, tourists enter a barren wonderland of twisted rock formations. here one can see extraordinary plants, shimmering in the heat of the plateau. Squat elephant’s foot plants cling to the rocks and a few dry types of grass blow in the wind.
