Ward’s Lake is one of Shillong’s most popular tourist attractions and a must-visit spot. Also known as Pollock’s Lake, it was named after a renowned engineer from the pre-independence era. The lake, believed to be over a century old, was envisioned by Sir William Ward, the then Chief Commissioner of Assam, and constructed in 1894 under Colonel Hopkins.

Located in the heart of Shillong, the lake is encircled by beautifully landscaped gardens, vibrant flower beds, cobblestone pathways, and a charming fountain. A wooden bridge stretches across the water, offering visitors the chance to feed the fish below. Boating is a favorite activity here, while a cozy cafeteria nearby serves a range of snacks and beverages. With its scenic beauty and lively atmosphere, Ward’s Lake Shillong attracts both locals and tourists alike.

The horseshoe-shaped Ward’s Lake, Shillong, is located near the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor. Encircled by a well-maintained botanical garden, it features cobblestone pathways, a graceful fountain, and a rich collection of orchids along with other floral species. A striking highlight of the lake is the wooden bridge that spans its center, offering picturesque views of the surroundings. Ward’s Lake in Shillong enjoys a subtropical highland climate, characterized by cool, dry winters (October–March) and mild, rainy summers (March–June). The region receives heavy monsoon showers from July to October, transforming the surroundings into a lush green landscape. Spring and summer bring pleasant, sunny days with average temperatures ranging from 16°C to 26°C, while winters are crisp and refreshing, with temperatures often hovering between 12°C and 16°C.

Temperature: Mild and pleasant, averaging between 16°C and 26°C.

Weather: Warm, sunny days with cool, refreshing evenings make it an ideal time for outdoor activities such as boating, picnics, and short treks.

Rainfall: Though the heavy monsoon sets in later, occasional showers become more frequent as summer advances.

Weather: Heavy rainfall is characteristic of this period, which extends for several months.

Temperature: Remains cool, often with temperatures around 12-16°C

Temperature: Cool, with average temperatures ranging between 12°C and 16°C.

Ward’s Lake in Shillong is a serene urban oasis, renowned for its scenic wooden bridge and tranquil grassy slopes that make it an ideal spot to relax by the water. A stone-paved pathway encircles the lake, guiding visitors through beautifully tended flower gardens and beneath the shade of tall, graceful trees.

One of Meghalaya’s most enchanting annual events is the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, held every November when the city’s cherry blossom trees burst into full bloom. Beginning in mid-November, the festival transforms Shillong into a vibrant hub of music, dance, food, and cultural celebration. Visitors can enjoy live performances, dance competitions, beauty pageants, and a variety of food stalls offering local and international flavors—all set against the breathtaking pink-and-white backdrop of cherry blossoms.

The 2024 edition, themed “Year of Legends”, promises to be unforgettable. Headlining acts include global icons Akon, Boney M, Lucas, and R3HAB, alongside tribute performances for Queen and Korn, as well as Indian pop stars Jasleen Royal and Kanika Kapoor.

Ward’s Lake in Shillong is generally open from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM during the cooler months (November to February) and from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM in the warmer months (March to October). However, visitors are advised to check with local authorities or the official Meghalaya Tourism website for the latest timings, as schedules may vary with the season or special events.

Paddle boating on the calm waters of Ward’s Lake is a favorite activity, while the restaurant overlooking the wooden bridge offers snacks and beverages with a view. The lake is a lively social hub where visitors of all ages gather—young couples, families, and children alike. Standing on the bridge to feed the fish or watch the resident ducks has long been a cherished pastime.

How To Reach Ward’s Lake

The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (Guwahati Airport), located at Borjhar, about 128 km from Shillong. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Shillong, which takes around 3–4 hours by road.  Meghalaya does not have a railway network. The closest major railway station is Guwahati Railway Station, approximately 100 km away. Shillong is well connected by road to Guwahati and other nearby towns. Regular Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) buses, as well as private shared cabs and taxis, operate frequently between Guwahati and Shillong. The scenic drive takes about 3–4 hours.
