The Geological Marvel-Columnar Joints of Bharudpura, Dhar

Columnar Joints of Bharudpura

The Columnar Joints of Bharudpura, located in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, India, are geological formations characterized by their distinctive columnar basalt structures. These formations are created through the process of cooling and solidification of lava flows. The Columnar joints are commonly developed in lava flows, sills, and dikes. Most columns in this place are straight with parallel sides and diameters from a few centimeters to 3 m. Some columns are curved and vary in width.

The lava contracts as it cools, forming cracks. Once the crack develops, it continues to grow. The growth is perpendicular to the surface of the flow. Meter-scale columnar joints have been identified in the Deccan Traps of Bharudpura, district Dhar, Madhya Pradesh.

How Columnar Joints forms

Columnar jointing occurs when lava cools and contracts, leading to the formation of polygonal columns. These columns can be straight or curved, and they often form hexagonal shapes due to the efficient packing of the columns. The size and shape of the columns depend on various factors including the rate of cooling, the composition of the lava, and the presence of any external forces.

The Columnar Joints of Bharudpura are significant from a geological standpoint and have cultural and historical importance. They attract tourists and geologists alike due to their unique formations and the insights they provide into the earth’s geological processes. These landmarks of Columnar jointing basalt in India have drawn comparisons to California’s Devil’s Postpile, Organ Pipe National Park, and Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway.

Visiting these formations offers an opportunity to witness the marvels of nature and gain a deeper understanding of the geological forces that shape our planet.
