Ranikhet
Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town located in Uttarakhand’s Almora district. It is home to the Kumaon Regiment (KRC), the Naga Regiment, and the Military Hospital, and is administered by the Indian Army. Perched at an altitude of 1,869 metres, Ranikhet Uttarakhand offers clear views of the western Himalayan peaks.

History
Ranikhet was once considered as a possible summer headquarters for British India—a distinction that ultimately went to Shimla. This charming hill town still carries the echoes of its colonial past and stands proud as the land of many brave men, including General Kashi Nath Adhikari. Today, it serves as the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment.
According to legend, a Kumaoni queen was so enchanted by this picturesque hill retreat that a palace was built in her honour, giving the place its name—Ranikhet, or “Queen’s Land.” Though no trace of the palace remains, the town retains its timeless charm: vibrant with flowers, pine forests, rolling meadows, and breathtaking Himalayan vistas.

Summer (June–August)- Temperatures: Daytime highs between 20°C and 28°C; nighttime lows around 15°C. Conditions: Warm with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Monsoon: July and August receive the most rainfall, with August averaging 758 mm of rain and about 27 rainy days.
Autumn (September–November)-Temperatures: Range from 15°C to 25°C. Conditions: Clear skies and crisp air, making it a popular time for trekking and photography.
Winter (December–February)- Temperatures: Daytime highs between 5°C and 15°C; nighttime lows can drop below freezing. Conditions: Cold with occasional snowfall, transforming Ranikhet into a winter wonderland. Snowfall: December to February are the peak months for snowfall.
Monsoon Season (July–August)- Rainfall: Heavy rainfall, with August being the wettest month. Humidity: High, often exceeding 85%. Travel Advisory: Not recommended for outdoor activities due to slippery trails and potential landslides.

Jhula Devi Temple
Overlooking Ranikhet and its surroundings is the Jhoola Devi Temple, a sacred shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga. The temple gets its name from the presiding deity, who is depicted seated on a cradle (jhoola). According to local tradition, the temple is around 700 years old, although the original idol was stolen in 1959. Much like the Chitai Golu Temple, Jhoola Devi is renowned for the numerous bells that adorn its premises. Devotees believe that the goddess fulfills their wishes, and once their prayers are answered, they return to offer a copper bell in gratitude.
Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum

How to Reach Ranikhet
Ranikhet is accessible by air, train, or road. The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, about 115 km away, while the closest railway station is Kathgodam, located 75 km from the town. From either point, visitors can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Ranikhet. Alternatively, a road trip from Delhi takes approximately 9–10 hours, offering scenic views along the way.
