Formation of Potholes

This geographic phenomenon is the result of water currents forcing pebbles, which are carried by the river get rolled in cracks and fissures within the basalt rock riverbed. Driven by the water, these trapped pebbles relentlessly rotate, gradually drilling smooth, regular, pot-shaped cavities over hundreds of years. These incredible, sculpture-like formations cover the riverbed and the narrow walls of the gorge. This site is a rare and significant example of natural potholes on a large scale, highlighting the force of water erosion.
