Nighoj Potholes is famous for the naturally created potholes on the riverbed of the Kukadi River. These geological potholes are found in a small village known as Nighoj in Ahmednagar. A geological wonder located about 90 kilometers away from Pune and 227 kilometers from Mumbai.

The Nighoj Potholes are renowned as Asia’s largest natural potholes, a spectacular sight created by the Kukadi River in Maharashtra. Over thousands of years, relentless erosion in the basaltic riverbed has sculpted bizarre, deep, and circular rock formations. This stretch of river, measuring 500 meters, features depressions so large that some are over 50 feet deep.

Formation of Potholes

This geographic phenomenon is the result of water currents forcing pebbles, which are carried by the river get rolled in cracks and fissures within the basalt rock riverbed. Driven by the water, these trapped pebbles relentlessly rotate, gradually drilling smooth, regular, pot-shaped cavities over hundreds of years. These incredible, sculpture-like formations cover the riverbed and the narrow walls of the gorge. This site is a rare and significant example of natural potholes on a large scale, highlighting the force of water erosion.

Researchers and experts from all over the world come here every year to study the phenomenon of these Potholes. The basalt rock, leading to the different shapes and sizes, can be seen on both sides of the river. Black and reddish basalt will surely enhance your curiosity towards nature and will force you to travel more in search of the diversity of beautiful Maharashtra. A similar kind of structure is found at” Bhedaghat” in Marble rock in Madhya Pradesh on the River Narmada.

The riverbed is characterized by bizarre and polished rock formations, and the area includes a deep gorge created by the water flow.

Apart from stunning, beautiful potholes, there are other attractions surrounding the area. Around the Potholes, there are many old temples established. One is a temple of Malganga, who is considered the local deity of the villagers. As per the locals, the potholes are actually a blessing of Malganga.

The Best time to visit Nighoj

The best time to visit Nighoj is winter or summer, when the water in the river recedes, leaving the potholes bare and dry. Village Nighoj is just 20 km away from the Aurangabad Pune highway, and Shirur is the nearest town, about 22 kilometers from Nighoj.

The best way to reach Nighoj Potholes from Pune by car is a drive of approximately 70.7 km, which usually takes about 1 hour and 47 minutes. The route primarily follows NH 753F.
