The largest Middle Island in Recherche Archipelago is an uninhabited nature preserve covered in the dense eucalyptus forest. The lake is about 600 meters long and is surrounded by a rim of sand. A narrow strip of sand dunes covered by vegetation separates it to the north from the Southern Ocean.

You will surprise as Lake does not have sparkling blue, green, or turquoise water that is usually found in other lakes. Here, you will see stunning pink-colored water. When you get closer to the lake the color takes on a more watery, translucent quality, but remains unmistakably pink. It even sees pink color in the bottle and it does not lose its color.

The pink color of the lake, all credit goes to an organism, Dunaliella salina. The carotenoid red pigments secreted by Dunaliella salina are responsible for the pink lakes’ otherworldly colors. There are also large amounts of halophytic bacteria and archaea in the salt crusts of the lake that could also be the cause for the lake’s interesting appearance.

Lake Hillier isn’t the only pink lake in the world; there is another famous lake on the coast of Senegal called Lake Reba. These same algae also flourish in the Dead Sea.
