Frozen Wonders: McMurdo Valley’s Unique Landscape
The McMurdo Dry Valleys are located on the western coast of McMurdo and form the largest ice-free area in Antarctica. The McMurdo dry valley covers a surface area of approximately 4,800 square kilometers. This ice-free area is unique in its frozen lakes, extensive areas of exposed soil, and salt accumulation. The Valley represents a region of Earth where life approaches its absolute environmental limits.
The McMurdo Valley is the driest place on Earth after the Atacama Desert. Though average temperatures in McMurdo are below freezing the Atacama averages 70 degrees. Surprisingly, the driest deserts are cold, not hot. That’s because cold air holds 20 times less water vapor than hot air. The Dry Valley’s condition is the closest to the conditions of Mars. That’s the reason NASA is testing old and new Martian exploration technology here.
The Dry Valleys are ice-free, or dry because any snow that falls on the valley floor is blown away by strong, dry katabatic winds. In this, the process of sublimation is also involved. Due to this, the Dry Valleys are cold, and one of the world’s most extreme deserts. The only ice that is found in the valleys is in the form of alpine glaciers along the steep valley.
The McMurdo dry valley has seen no rain for nearly 2 million years. There is no precipitation in this region and it makes the 4800 square kilometer region of almost no water, ice, or snow.
The Dry Valleys were first discovered by Captain Scott in 1903 they believed the valleys to be void of any life. Because life is a rare occurrence in this severe climate. But some facts say that life has been found, in the most unlikely of places, and that unlikely place is the alien terrain of the McMurdo Dry Valleys.
Thousands of people, mostly researchers, scientists, and brave hostile the continent every year and inhabit the unique “town” of McMurdo Station. From here researchers have made groundbreaking discoveries in and around the valleys. The terrain is full of mystery and surprises truly represent the tenacity of life and the possibility that it extends beyond the world.
