Kalimpong is a beautiful hill station in North Bengal that can be reached from either Siliguri or Darjeeling. It is 67 Km from Siliguri and is popular for its panoramic valley views, Buddhist monasteries, churches, and Tibetan arts. Kalimpong means “ridge where we play”. It is said that local tribesmen used to organize field sports when they weren’t engaged in agricultural pursuits hence it is the name Kalimpong. It is a notable town with a major Lepcha population and a special culture of its. The traveler attractions in Kalimpong incorporates its excellent serene environment, great see of snow-capped mountains, and exquisite surroundings slopes. After Darjeeling, this is often the most prevalent destination in the northeast. Following the Indian independence in 1947, the hill station became a part of West Bengal. The Indian Army’s 27 Mountain Division is located on the outskirts of the town.

Situated on the lower ranges of the Himalayas, Kalimpong offers panoramic vistas of the Teesta Rangit Valley in Sikkim. Kalimpong is about 53 km from the hill station of Darjeeling. The town was added to the district of Darjeeling in 1866. Kalimpong is mostly east of the Tista River, west of Ni-chu & Jaldhaka Rivers, south of Sikkim & Bhutan, and north of Jalpaiguri District.

The tract is mostly mountainous, the elevation varying greatly from 91 meters in the plains to 3000 meters. Only a few square kilometers of areas that form a narrow belt on the southern portion of Chel, Neora, and Jaldhaka consist of flat terrain. The general slopes vary from moderate to precipitous. The general trend of the main rivers is from north to south but there are many subsidiary streams with large valleys.

The geological formation consists mostly of metamorphic rocks representing all the stages of dynamo thermal metamorphism. There is a thin layer of soil on the hilltops, especially along gentle slopes. Besides, along the present river banks, there are freshly deposited thin mantles of aluminum, sands, and boulders, which form recent terraces. The rocks are dominantly phyllites, schists, gneisses, and quartzites.

Zang Dhok Palri Monastery

Zang Dhok Palri Monastery is the most famous religious temple in Kalimpong. This lovely cloister was favored by the Dalai Lama during his visit to the town in 1976. From here religious community one can get a striking see of the snowcapped Kanchenjunga mountain, and the flawless Teesta Stream running down below. The religious place has incredible importance, as nearly 108 kangyur (Tibetan Sacred writings) were brought in from Tibet and protected the interior of the monastery.

Kalimpong Science Centre

Kalimpong India lies between the fields of the Dooars and the slopes of Darjeeling – Sikkim Himalayas. The most recent expansion to the tourism of Kalimpong is the Science City set up in 2008. How to reach Kalimpong India

The best way to reach Kalimpong is by air. The closest air terminal is Bagdogra close to Siliguri, from here one can hire Cab to Kalimpong. This airplane terminal is connected to Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati. International travelers can get interfacing flights from Kolkata or Delhi. The closest railhead is the Jalpaiguri railway station. This is often well associated with most of the major cities in India.
