Gravity Defied: Strange & Incredible Mystery of the Magnetic Hill Ladakh

Magnetic Hill

Magnetic Hill in Ladakh is located on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar Highway, at a distance of 30 km from Leh city, India. Perched at a height of 14,000 feet above sea level, this is a mysterious spot where the laws of gravity seem not to apply. It is a small stretch of road, where a magnetic hill pulls stationary vehicles upwards is due to its phenomenon of gravity. There are many theories about Magnetic Hill. All of them propose a different logic.

When you reach the spot, a sign along the road invites you to stop your car over a white square. This road attracts stationary vehicles upwards. When left with the engine off, a car can roll up at a speed of 20km/hr on this hill. Due to this mysterious phenomenon, it has been given many names like ‘Mystery Hill’ and ‘Gravity Hill’. The famous Sindhu River runs on the eastern side of this hill.

Hypothesis

Residents in Ladakh believe that ‘The Magnetic Hill is a straightaway to heaven’; they believe that there once existed a road that led people to heaven. Deserving people would automatically be pulled there, whereas those who were undeserving could never find their way to it.

The science behind this

The exact reason behind this phenomenon has not been discovered yet. However, there are two theories behind the phenomenon.

The Magnetic Force Theory

This theory states that there is a strong magnetic force near the hill that pulls vehicles that are within its range. The strange magnetic force on the Leh-Kargil highway has been experienced and testified to by travelers from across the world.  In fact, the magnetic force is so strong that not only vehicles on the road, but the magnetic effect has also been observed on airplanes and helicopters. Pilots have to increase their altitude when they pass over the hill. Interestingly, a similar phenomenon can be observed at the Kala Dungar hills of Bhuj.

The Optical Illusion Theory

Another equally popular theory is the optical illusion theory. This theory says that the hill is no source of magnetic force; rather, it’s just an optical illusion. It just creates an optical illusion so that the road, which actually goes downhill, seems like it goes uphill. Therefore, when you see the vehicle going upslope, it is actually the opposite and going down.
