Geography

The country’s area variously consists of 48,670 km2 making it the second largest country in the Antilles after Cuba. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The Bahamas lies, to the north, and to the east, the US Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.  The Dominican Republic’s capital and largest city Santo Domingo is on the southern coast.

The Dominican Republic has four important mountain ranges. The most northerly is the Cordillera Septentrional (Northern Mountain Range), which extends from the coastal town of Monte Cristi, near the Haitian border, to the Samana Peninsula in the east, running parallel to the Atlantic coast. The Cordillera Central is the highest range in the whole of the West Indies. The Cibao valley is the major valley and home to the cities of Santiago and La Vega and most of the farming areas of the nation.

Beaches

The Dominican Republic has white sand beaches, punctuated with slim coconut trees reaching the skies. Visitors will keep busy finding your favorite plot of sand along our 1,600-kilometer sandy coastline. Over 200 beaches line the Caribbean and the Atlantic coastlines, ranging from a brilliant white to a handful of black sand stretching southwest.

Visit Punta Cana’s world-renowned 48-kilometer stretch and Samana’s world-ranked beaches such as Playa Rincon. On the north coast, visitors find Playa Cabarete to Playa Grande, or Playa Punta Rucia. Caribbean-facing beaches are safe year-round, while our northern coastline requires more attention to weather conditions before swimming. Sundays are family beach days for Dominicans, with plenty of food and music.

CABO ROJO-Cabo Rojo remains one of the DR’s most popular beaches, winning visitors over with its captivating coastal views. Its turquoise waters are also home to some of the Caribbean Sea’s best-preserved coral reefs.

Juan Dolio Beach- Juan Dolio is a favorite weekend and holiday retreat for Dominicans, with palm trees. Juan Dolio is a compact destination with lots on offer within easy walking and driving distance. It is the ideal destination if you visiting for a few days, a stay at Juan Dolio gives you the chance to relax, swim, dive, and explore food and drink. During the 80s, Juan Dolio beach was the focal point of the DR’s booming tourist trade and one of the biggest drawcards for international visitors.

Montana Redonda

At Montana Redonda, one can enjoy panoramic views from one of the many swings and lookouts. Visitors can swing out over the edge, you can stay closer to the ground in one of the hammocks or seats, instead. Montana Redonda’s main drawcard is the very photogenic view. Montaña Redonda is a forty-minute drive southeast of the coastal town of Miches. Miches has beautiful, unspoiled beaches almost completely unknown to tourists.

Samana peninsula

Samana peninsula is the perfect place to watch the North Atlantic Humpback Whales, in the warm marine sanctuary of Samana Bay before they begin their long migration to their summer grounds as far away as Greenland and Iceland. During the Samana whale-watching season, there are at least 300 whales in Samana Bay. With all those whales, you’ll have ample chance to watch all sorts of behavior on display. The whale nursery in Samana Bay is heavily protected. Only whale-watching boats are allowed to enter the bay.

The Dominican Republic has 26 designer golf courses amid breathtaking coastlines with mountain backdrops and lush greenery. Natural settings in the country included romantic waterfalls and idyllic accommodations. Dominican specialties are cigars, rum, chocolate, coffee, merengue, amber, and larimar. The Dominican Republic is a top destination for weddings and romance.

Hike Pico Duarte -the highest mountain in the Caribbean

The Dominican Republic shares the island with Haiti, occupying two-thirds of the territory. It’s not only home to some of the best beaches in the world, but water caves, waterfalls, rivers, valleys, lakes, rainforests, and tall mountains are also worth seeing. The country’s highest and largest mountain range is the Cordillera Central, which includes Pico Duarte, the highest peak in both the Dominican Republic and all of the Caribbean islands. The central mountain range is sometimes nicknamed the Dominican Alps, known for its impressive peaks and surprisingly cool climate. The Jose Armando Bermudez National Park straddles the Cordillera range and is home to the Pico Duarte 3,000 meters in altitude. Most hikers to Pico Duarte come through Jarabacoa. At Manabao in Jarabacoa, there is an official park entrance, where hikers begin the trail. The hike is usually done in three days and two nights.

River rafting

Jarabacoa is the best place in the Dominican Republic’s oceanside towns. If you want to lounge on the beach, head to Jarabacoa’s soaring peaks for verdant hikes, whitewater rafting on a roaring river, and warm mugs of Dominican coffee on cool, misty mountain mornings. Apart from this Bayahibe is a former fishing village known for Scuba diving turned quiet resort town. Just a few miles from town, Bayahibe Beach, Dominicus Beach, and boat launches that ferry you to Isla Saona, a national park worth seeing.

How to reach the Dominican Republic

Situated just 1264 km. from Miami and 12444 km. from New York, the best way to reach the Dominican Republic is by plane. The country’s two main airports are Punta Cana International in the east of the country, and Las Americas International Airport, about 40 minutes from Santo Domingo.
