Nagpatong Rock Formation, located in Brgy. Cuyambay, Tanay, Rizal, features towering stacked limestone pillars rising to about 560 meters above sea level. The Nagpatong Rock Formation is a distinctive geological feature, including towering limestone pillars and rugged cliffs that provide stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can explore the area and admire rock formations shaped over centuries by natural erosion.

The site also offers exciting opportunities for hiking and rock climbing, making it ideal for adventure seekers. The name Nagpatong Rock Formation is derived from the Tagalog word “Patong,” meaning “stacked on top of each other.” The mountain was given this name because of the distinct layers of rock visible along its cliffs, where large stones appear to have been naturally piled together over time.

Sierra Madre mountain range is the longest mountain range in the Philippines, stretching more than 540 kilometers along the eastern coast of Luzon. Often called the “backbone of Luzon,” it serves as a vital natural shield against Pacific typhoons. The range extends across 10 provinces, from Cagayan in the north to Quezon in the south. The highest peaks include Mount Guiwan, Mount Anacuao, and Mount Bintuod. Hiking Trails in the mountains are often moderately steep, with dense cover, weak mobile signals, and river crossings.

Nagpatong Rock Formation features a 3.30-kilometer trail and is defined by two distinct rock towers that stand opposite each other. These striking cliffs are formed from massive rocks stacked one above another, creating a unique and dramatic landscape. It offers sweeping views of the Sierra Madre range. The site is often paired with a visit to Tungtong waterfalls. Rated as a moderate (3/9) trek, the hike involves steep, rocky paths and climbing wooden ladders, and is best undertaken during the dry months from November to April.

How To Reach Nagpatong Rock Formations 

To reach the Nagpatong Rock Formations in Tanay, Rizal, take a jeepney or private vehicle to  Cogeo (Gate 2) or Padilla in Antipolo or Barangay Cayabu, the common jump-off point, where you must register and hire a guide. The 1-2 hour hike is considered beginner-friendly but involves a steep, challenging final climb. It is often paired with trips to Tungtong waterfalls.
