Apache Lake
Apache Lake is one of four reservoirs created along the Salt River in central Arizona as part of the Salt River Project. Apache Lake lies along the scenic Apache Trail, about 16 miles east of Tortilla Flat in Maricopa County, Arizona, and roughly 104 km northeast of Phoenix.
Formed by the Horse Mesa Dam on the Salt River, completed in 1927, Apache Lake is the second-largest of the four reservoirs created by the Salt River Project. It is situated approximately 8 km downstream from Theodore Roosevelt Lake, the largest, and upstream from Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake.

The Apache Lake Trail
The Apache Trail in Arizona is a historic route that originally served as a stagecoach trail winding through the rugged Superstition Mountains. It takes its name from the Apache Indians, who first used the path to traverse the mountainous terrain. Historically, the trail connected Apache Junction at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Theodore Roosevelt Lake, passing through the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest.
Towards northeast from Apache Junction to Tortilla Flat, the trail—officially designated E. Apache Trail (Arizona State Route 88) in this section—is paved. A few miles east of Tortilla Flat, it transitions into a dirt road and remains unpaved for nearly the rest of its length. The section east of Apache Junction is part of State Route 88, which also serves as a major traffic corridor through Apache Junction, becoming Main Street in Mesa and later Apache Boulevard in Tempe, ending at Mill Avenue. Before the Superstition Freeway was completed in 1992, this portion of the trail was part of US Highway 60, which was rerouted once the freeway opened.

The trail stretches approximately 64 km through steep, rugged desert mountains, passing scenic reservoir lakes such as Canyon Lake and Apache Lake. The road from just east of Tortilla Flat to Roosevelt Dam is narrow, winding, and unpaved, with cliff drops and minimal safety barriers. Drivers should exercise caution; the trail is not recommended for large RVs, SUVs, or caravans, and many RV rental companies in the U.S. restrict their vehicles from using this route.

How to Reach Apache Lake
To reach Apache Lake, fly into a major U.S. airport like Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), and then drive to the lake. The most scenic route is to head east to Apache Junction and follow State Route 88 (the Apache Trail), or drive south via Highway 188. Keep in mind that sections of the Apache Trail are steep and rough, making them unsuitable for some vehicles, particularly those towing trailers.
