Colmar, France’s Hidden Postcard Town

Colmar France

Colmar is a charming town that enchants visitors with its picturesque scenery and rich history. Its beautifully preserved medieval old town and unique blend of German and French architectural styles have inspired the design of half-timbered houses in many Disney animated films, much like Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Neuschwanstein Castle have. Colmar is a city and commune located in the Alsace region in northeastern France. It is the third-largest commune in Alsace, after Strasbourg and Mulhouse, and serves as both the prefecture of Haut-Rhin and the subprefecture of the Colmar-Ribeauvillé arrondissement

First recorded in the 9th century, Colmar developed into a significant medieval trading center within the Holy Roman Empire. It was annexed by France in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV, but maintained a strong Germanic identity due to its cultural and geographical ties. Over the centuries, the city alternated between French and German rule several times before finally becoming part of France permanently in 1945.

Geography

Colmar lies 64 kilometres south-southwest of Strasbourg, at coordinates 48.08°N, 7.36°E, on the River Lauch—a tributary of the Ill. The city is situated just east of the Vosges Mountains and is connected to the Rhine River to the east by a canal. As of 2017, Colmar had a population of 69,105, while its metropolitan area counted 199,234 residents in 2018.  Colmar is like a living postcard, a place where strolling through its charming streets is an absolute delight. The town’s quiet and calm nature makes this place a romantic weekend getaway.
