Ragusa Sicily
Ragusa is a city and comune in southern Italy, serving as the capital of the province of Ragusa on the island of Sicily. As of 2025, it has a population of 73,778. The city is set on a broad limestone hill between two deep valleys, Cava San Leonardo and Cava Santa Domenica, and, along with seven other cities of the Val di Noto, forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Geography and History
Ragusa Sicily is a hill town situated at the foothills of the Hyblaean Mountains and is historically divided into Ragusa Ibla and Ragusa Superiore. The municipality shares borders with Chiaramonte Gulfi, Comiso, Giarratana, Modica, Monterosso Almo, Rosolini (SR), Santa Croce Camerina, Scicli, and Vittoria. It also includes the hamlets of Marina di Ragusa, located on the coast, and San Giacomo Bellocozzo.
The origins of Ragusa date back to the 2nd millennium BC, when the area was home to several Sicel settlements. The present-day district of Ragusa Ibla has been identified with the ancient city of Hybla Heraea. Situated on a 300-metre-high hill, the city came into contact with nearby Greek colonies and prospered thanks to the nearby port of Camerina. After a brief period of Carthaginian rule, Ragusa fell under Roman and Byzantine control, during which the city was fortified and a large castle was constructed. In 848 AD, the Arabs occupied Ragusa, maintaining control until the 11th century, when the Normans conquered the city. Ragusa was then established as a county seat, with its first count being Geoffrey, son of Count Ruggero of Sicily.

Ragusa has no direct train station in the city center; the nearest stations are Modica Station, approximately 15 km away, which can be reached by bus or taxi. Vittoria Station: Approximately 25 km away; a taxi or bus is needed to reach Ragusa.
