Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda, spans 160 km². of lush rainforest and includes five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. The park borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. It serves as a habitat for both the mountain gorilla and the golden monkey and was once the base of the renowned primatologist Dian Fossey.

The Musanze Cave
The Musanze Cave, stretching 2 kilometers in length, is the most frequently visited cave in the region. Located on the grounds of Innes University, it lies within a volcanic area that dates back 65 million years, where lava flows helped shape the Albertine Rift Valley. The cave is part of the basaltic lava layers from the Bisoke and Sabyinyo volcanoes.

The cave features 31 entrances, most of which are the result of roof collapses. The main entrance is cathedral-sized and houses a large bat colony. The natural collapses create a stunning display of colorful light shafts that shine into the cave. Musanze Cave has served as a refuge during wartime for centuries and was the site of a massacre during the genocide. It remains of significant cultural importance to the local community, so visitors are asked to approach the site with respect.
