Vernazza is a town and comune in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, in northwestern Italy. One of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre region, Vernazza is the fourth town when heading north. Car-free and largely untouched by modern traffic, it remains one of the most authentic fishing villages on the Italian Riviera. Vernazza boasts the only natural port in Cinque Terre and is renowned for its elegant, colorful houses. The town’s name comes from the Latin adjective verna, meaning “native.” Its local wine, vernaccia—which translates as “local” or “ours”—also inspired the village’s name. Vernazza is recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy.

Vernazza Cinque Terre

Vernazza is one of the five picturesque villages of Italy’s Cinque Terre, located on the rugged Ligurian coast. It is famous for its colorful houses clustered around a natural harbor, the prominent Doria Castle, and the Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia. As the only village in Cinque Terre with a natural port, Vernazza historically thrived as a fishing hub and continues to be a popular destination. Visitors are drawn to its scenic beauty, terraced olive groves, and hiking trails within the Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though the village can become crowded during peak seasons.

Vernazza features the only natural port in the Cinque Terre—a small, charming harbor framed by colorful buildings and a sandy beach. The village is renowned for its vibrant Ligurian houses perched on dramatic cliffs, creating an iconic and picturesque landscape.

Vernazza is home to medieval landmarks like Doria Castle and the Belforte, defensive structures built to protect the village from pirates in earlier centuries. The surrounding hillsides are adorned with steep, terraced vineyards and olive groves, adding to the village’s scenic charm.
