The Ultimate Adventure: Hiking Bulgaria’s Seven Rila Lakes

Seven Rila Lakes

The Seven Rila Lakes (Sedemte rilski ezera in Bulgarian) are a famous chain of glacial lakes located in the northwestern Rila Mountain, Bulgaria. They are the most visited group of lakes in the country, situated at elevations between 2,100 and 2,500 meters above sea level.

The Seven Rila Lakes Bulgaria are a popular Bulgarian tourist destination, prized for their natural setting. The lakes are arranged sequentially, connected by small streams that form waterfalls and cascades. A nearby chalet, located on the northeastern shore of The Fish Lake at 2,196 m elevation, provides tourist accommodation.

Each lake is named after its most defining characteristic. The highest lake, Salzata (“The Tear”), is so-named for its clear waters, which offer excellent visibility into its depth. The next one down, Okoto (“The Eye”), gets its name from its nearly perfect oval shape and is the deepest cirque lake in Bulgaria at 37.5 m. Finally, Babreka (“The Kidney”) possesses the steepest shores of the entire group.

How the Seven Rila Lakes form

The Seven Rila Lakes were formed by ancient glaciers that sculpted depressions into the Rila Mountains. This process involved glacial erosion carving out the basins and moraine amphitheaters. After the glaciers receded during and following the last Ice Age, the depressions filled with meltwater, resulting in the lakes seen today.
