In Tamil Nadu, the Cauvery River tumbles over rocks to create Hogenakkal Falls. Sometimes called the “Niagara Falls of India,” Hogenakkal Fall is dwarfed in size and strength by the Niagara, but it offers an impressive view to the visitors. This is one of the wonderful waterfalls in river Cauvery in the state of Tamil Nadu. The main attraction of the falls is its vertical drop from a height of 20 meters with a thundering sound. A sacred bathing place, Hogenakkal is well known for its power of healing.

The Cauvery is one of the largest rivers in India. It stretches some 805 km across the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Falls are formed where the river cuts through the rocky terrain on the border between the two states. Hogenakkal falls are made up of a number of individual waterfalls, which range from about 4.5 meters to 20 meters tall.

Hogenakkal offers a thrilling experience, and perhaps that is why the name Hoge meaning ‘Smoke’ and Kal meaning ‘Rock’, the smoke that thunders on Rock. Eventually, the river Cauvery flattens out to sandy banks and flows to made famous Mettur Dam. Carbonatite, a type of igneous rock, forms the basis of the falls. The carbonatite rocks found at Hogenakkal are some of the rare of their kind, not only in South Asia but also in the world.

The falls encapsulates the beauty and serenity of the Cauvery River meeting with the Western Ghats while giving out an appearance that can be regarded as India’s great wonder. Along with Athirapally and Chitrakoot Waterfalls, Tamil Nadu’s Hogenakkal Falls is also considered to be the resemblance of famous Niagara Falls of the West. With its eccentric rock formation and cascading white waters from the river Cauvery, it promises a view that would leave you awe-inspired. It is one of the top places to visit in Hogenakkal Falls of Dharmapuri district.

Visitors can take a boat to the prime attraction or find a spot atop one of the hills surrounding the falls to relish the sight. Apart from the scenic waterfalls, the main attraction of these falls is boating in Coracles, in Tamil Paris is locally made boats using Bamboos and a ride on this is a must-do when you are at Hogenakkal falls.

Mettur Dam

Located in the Mettur Village, The Mettur Dam is one of India’s largest dams. It has been constructed across the grand Cauvery river canyon and is surrounded by towering hills and beautiful greenery. It is the biggest attraction among tourists. The extraordinary design of the dam and its importance to the surrounding villages makes it a prime tourist destination.

Melanie Hills

One more famous place to visit in Hogenakkal falls is the Melagiri Hills. Hiking to the hills to be a thrilling experience for the tourist. More attractive things to the hills are the fact that it is a confluence of the Eastern and Western Ghats.  Hogenakkal falls can be visited around the year but the best time is after the monsoon season. Hogenakkal has located at a distance of 114 km from Salem and 133 km from Bangalore.
