Singapore Island

Singapore or the Republic of Singapore is a sovereign island country and mega city in Asia. It is the largest port in Southeast Asia and one of the busiest maritime ports in the world. With an area of only 725.7 sq. km, the country is home to a population of over 5 million residents and has the second-greatest population density in the world. Singapore is one of the world’s smallest countries, comprising one main island and over 60 smaller ones. Some of these islands are Sentosa, Jurong, Tekong, and Senang.

There are several hillocks in the middle of the main island, west and southwest the land is a series of low ridges, while east and southeast, the land is generally flat. The highest point of Singapore island is Bukit Timah at only 166 m, while the lowest point is the Strait of Singapore (0 m). A large number of narrow and short streams drain through Singapore, some of which flow into the sea through mangrove swamps, or estuaries. There are no significant lakes or rivers and the central area is covered with reservoirs.

Singapore is the Capital city of the Republic of Singapore, located off the coast of the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia, between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. It is located in both the Northern and Eastern hemispheres of the Earth. It is just 1 degree of latitude above the Equator. The country borders the South China Sea to the east, the Strait of Malacca to the west, Riau Islands lie to the south, and the Straits of Johor to the north.

Singapore island began as a trading post for the East India Trading Company. It was officially founded by British statesman Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. Singapore is a small but fascinating country, its name translates from ancient Sanskrit meaning “Lion City,” Singapore is a unitary state and is divided into 5 Community Development Councils (CDCs). In alphabetical order, these councils are- Central Singapore CDC, North East CDC, North West CDC, South East CDC, and South West CDC. Each Community Development Council has been further subdivided into electoral constituencies and town councils. Singapore island has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons. It has uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity, and abundant rainfall. Temperatures usually range from 23 to 32 °C, While the temperature does not vary greatly throughout the year, there is a wetter monsoon season from November to February.
