Sawn Rocks-The Organ Pipes, A Volcanic Masterpiece

Sawn Rocks

The Sawn Rocks are a spectacular sight, showcasing one of Australia’s best examples of organ-piping, a geological formation named for its resemblance to a towering wall of giant organ pipes. These dramatic, striking formations serve as a vivid reminder of Mount Kaputar’s volcanic past.

A gentle, 15-minute walk on a shaded trail brings you right to the lookout at the base of the Sawn Rocks. If you’re looking to snap the best photos, aim to visit after midday—that’s when the sun lights up the dramatic cliff face.

Sawn Rocks National Park

New South Wales sawn rocks is one of the most remarkable and iconic geological features in Mount Kaputar National Park, located near Narrabri in North West NSW, Australia. The park is within the New South Wales National Park, which is a large protected area. The Mount Kaputar National Park is officially named a single park, created to protect the Nandewar Range, a former volcanic region, including geological wonders like Sawn Rocks and the Mount Kaputar summit.

The Main Feature: It is a towering, 40-meter-high cliff face composed of perfectly formed columnar basalt—a geological phenomenon often described as “organ-piping” because the columns resemble a giant, petrified pipe organ. Formation: The columns were formed millions of years ago when basaltic lava from the ancient Nandewar Volcano cooled very slowly and evenly, causing the rock to contract and crack into precise pentagonal (five-sided) and hexagonal (six-sided) pillars. Access: Sawn Rocks Australia is accessible via an easy, all-weather, and mostly wheelchair-accessible 1.5 km return walking track that follows a shady creek bed to a lookout at the foot of the cliff.
