Geology

The large spherical concretions at Red Rocks Coulee are hosted in the Bearpaw Formation, which makes up the bedrock in the area. The formation was sculpted by erosion, exposing the concretions and creating areas of badlands and hoodoos. The dark gray shale, with greenish and gray sandstone and siltstone, pale grey bentonite, and brown ironstone create bands of color across the exposed badlands. The Bearpaw Formation was deposited in the Western Interior Seaway. and it includes a variety of marine fossils, primarily remains of ammonites, bivalves, and fish. The Formation is of Late Cretaceous age.

Red Rock Coulee Natural Area is a protected natural area. It covers an area of approximately 320 hectares. Apart from a unique landscape and red sandstone rock formations, the site is also home to a variety of plant and animal species and is considered to be an important area for scientific research and conservation.
