Geography

The island’s terrain is mostly granite and very rocky, with many areas shaped by strong winds. In the past, high-quality clay and baryte—a mineral used as a lubricant in oil drilling—were mined on the eastern side of the island until the late 20th century. To meet the needs of its residents and tourists, Mykonos produces around 4,500 cubic metres of water daily using reverse osmosis of seawater. The island has a population of nearly 12,500, most of whom live in the main town, Chora.
