Hogenakkal Waterfall
In Tamil Nadu, the Cauvery River tumbles over rocks to create Hogenakkal Falls. Sometimes called the “Niagara Falls of India,” Hogenakkal Falls is dwarfed in size and strength by the Niagara, but it offers an impressive view to the visitors. This is one of the wonderful waterfalls in the river Cauvery in the state of Tamil Nadu. The main attraction of the falls is its vertical drop from a height of 20 meters with a thundering sound. A sacred bathing place, Hogenakkal, is well known for its power of healing.

The Cauvery is one of the largest rivers in India. It stretches some 805 km across the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Falls are formed where the river cuts through the rocky terrain on the border between the two states. The carbonatite rocks found at Hogenakkal are some of the rarest of their kind, not only in South Asia but also in the world.

Visitors can take a boat to the prime attraction or find a spot atop one of the hills surrounding the falls to relish the sight. Apart from the scenic waterfalls, the main attraction of these falls is boating in Coracles, in Tamil Nadu is locally made boats using bamboo, and a ride on this is a must-do when you are at Hogenakkal falls.

Located in the Mettur Village, the Mettur Dam is one of India’s largest dams. It has been constructed across the grand Cauvery river canyon and is surrounded by towering hills and beautiful greenery. One more famous place to visit in Hogenakkal Falls is the Melagiri Hills. Hiking in the hills is a thrilling experience for the tourist. More attractive things to the hills are the fact that it is a confluence of the Eastern and Western Ghats. Hogenakkal falls can be visited around the year, but the best time is after the monsoon season. Hogenakkal is located at a distance of 114 km from Salem and 133 km from Bangalore.

How to Reach Hogenakkal Waterfall
You can reach Hogenakkal Falls by taking a bus or train to Dharmapuri, the nearest major town, and then continuing the remaining 47 km by local taxi or bus. Alternatively, you can take a train to Palakkodu or a direct bus from Bangalore to Dharmapuri, followed by a taxi to the falls. The nearest major airport is Bengaluru International Airport (BLR), from where taxis and buses are available to Dharmapuri.
