Founded between the 14th and 15th centuries, Hahoe and Yangdong are regarded as the two most representative historic clan villages in Korea. Their layouts and locations—nestled against forested mountains, facing rivers, and bordered by open farmland—embody the aristocratic Confucian culture that flourished during the early Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910).

The villages feature residences of head families, large timber-framed houses of other clan members, as well as pavilions, study halls, and Confucian academies. Clusters of modest, one-story, mud-walled, thatched-roof houses once accommodated commoners. The surrounding landscapes of mountains, rivers, and trees.
