Dudhsagar Waterfalls
Dudhsagar Waterfalls is a 4-tiered waterfall located in the Indian state of Goa. The majestic cascade of white water running over the steep, nearly vertical cliff of the mountain from a spectacular height of 310 meters. It is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring, making one aware that there are many forces in nature much more powerful than the human mind and body. The waterfall is located in the Sanguem Taluka of Goa, and it is a part of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

Goa is famous for its splendid beaches, but there are a number of unexplored places to visit in Goa. The name ‘Dudhsagar’ literally translates to ‘sea of milk’. The waterfall creates an allusion to the white spray and foam into the waters of the lake. The falls are at their peak during the monsoon season, although fall is a popular attraction all year round.
Geography
The River Mandovi begins on the Deccan plateau in the state of Karnataka. Running its way through the Western Ghats, this river plummets over the highest peaks on the border of Goa and Karnataka, thus forming the Dudhsagar Falls Goa. After making a deep green pool at the base of the falls, the river continues westward to join the Arabian Sea.

The Dudhsagar waterfall Goa measures about 310m in height and about 30 m in width. The waterfall splits into three streams over the vertical cliff of the mountain and forming a truly magnificent sight. The waterfall is also known as Tambdi Surla among the locals. Dudhsagar is set with breathtaking scenery overlooking a steep, crescent-shaped mountain valley and carpeted with pristine tropical forest.

Dudhsagar waterfall Goa gives a spectacular view from the railway bridge. Here, visitors can get a zoomed-in view of the fall, where a part of the fall will be above the visitors and other parts will be below, flowing from behind the bridge. Tourists would also get a view of the falls for a few seconds when they are on board a train towards Madgaon in Goa.

Another viewpoint is the Dudhsagar Falls Base. Here, visitors walk to the base of the waterfall and can view the entire waterfall from top to bottom. At this place, people even swim if the flow is not too forceful. You would have to enter a gate that says Dudhsagar waterfall, and you would find a viewpoint here.

Trekking
To explore Dudhsagar waterfalls Goa during the Monsoon, Trekking is the only way to reach these Falls from June to September. It is the best full-day trip from Goa as it takes you away from all the hustle and bustle and introduces you to the raw beauty of nature. The most adventurous trek starts from Kulhem or Collem railway station, which is 11km long and offers tourists a picturesque view of the Ghats and valleys. The second trek starts at Castle Rock station. This trek spans about 14km of rough terrain.

The area around the Dudh Sagar waterfalls is part of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to several animals and birds. The roads to the waterfalls are maintained by the Goa Forest Department, which charges visitors a nominal fee for entry.

After the shooting of the famous Bollywood movie ‘Chennai Express’ at Dudhsagar Falls, it has become very popular and is often a part of the visit list of tourists willing to travel to offbeat Goa. Considered among the highest waterfalls in India, the waterfalls are particularly unique and spectacular due to a railway track that cuts right through the middle of the falls. The waterfall is about 70 km from Panji and 46 km from Madgaon.
How to reach Dudhsagar waterfalls
To reach this stunning natural wonder, the journey begins with a challenging drive along a bumpy track, accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicles. Even then, an additional 1 km trek is required to reach the waterfall’s base. For convenience, six-seater jeeps can be hired for Rs 1200, with the driver waiting for one and a half hours to allow time for your visit. One can also see the scenic location via the Train passing through Madgaon or Vasco Da Gama to Collem (or Kulem) Section.
The more adventurous can choose one of two distinct trekking routes:
The Thrill from Kuveshi: This challenging trek starts at Kuveshi village. Note: This trail crosses the Mandovi River, which is rough and swollen during the monsoon months, making the trek unavailable during that season.
The Scenic Path from Kulem: A longer, 11 km trek starting at the Kulem (Collem) railway station, rewarding visitors with splendid views of the surrounding Ghats and valleys.
