Sultanpur National Park

Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, officially known as Sultanpur National Park, is a popular bird sanctuary located in Sultanpur, near Gurgaon, in the Indian state of Haryana. The sanctuary is situated approximately 40 kilometers from Delhi, making it easily accessible from the capital city. The Sanctuary is known for being a haven for birdwatchers, especially during the winter migration season. It attracts a wide variety of migratory birds, including both aquatic and terrestrial species. Commonly spotted birds include Siberian cranes, greater flamingos, ruff, black-winged stilt, common greenshank, northern pintail, and many others.

The National park is centered around a freshwater lake and a system of wetlands, providing an ideal habitat for a diverse range of bird species. The sanctuary is equipped with facilities such as watchtowers, hides, and a museum. These amenities make it easier for visitors to observe and appreciate the birds without causing disturbance to the natural habitat.

History of Sultanpur National Park

Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary was originally a hunting ground during the British colonial era. In 1969, the area was declared a bird sanctuary, and in 1972, it was officially designated as the Sultanpur National Park. The transformation from a hunting ground to a protected area marked the beginning of efforts to preserve its natural ecosystem and the diverse bird species that inhabit the region. Over time, the sanctuary has gained recognition not only for its role in bird conservation but also for its contribution to environmental education and awareness. In 1989, it was declared a National Park by the Haryana government.

Sultanpur National Park is located in the Gurgaon district of Haryana, 46 km. from Delhi and 15 km. from Gurgaon on the Gurgaon – Farukh Nagar Road. A good pair of binoculars is a must to see the wildlife from a safe distance, without disturbing them. There are four watch towers located at different points to watch birds surrounding in sanctuary.

The best time to visit Sultanpur National Park

The best time to visit Sultanpur National Park is during the winter months, from October to March. This period coincides with the migratory season when a large number of birds, including several species of migratory waterfowl, visit the sanctuary. Here are some reasons why this time is considered optimal-

The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, which is well-connected to major cities in India and around the world. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or use other transportation options to reach Sultanpur National Park.

The nearest railway station to Sultanpur National Park is the Gurgaon Railway Station.  The Delhi Junction (Old Delhi) and New Delhi Railway Station are major railway stations in Delhi, and you can also reach Sultanpur by hiring a taxi or taking public transportation from these stations.

From Delhi

Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is approximately 40 kilometers from Delhi. You can drive or hire a taxi to reach the sanctuary. The journey usually takes about an hour, depending on traffic conditions.
