Japan
Japan is an island nation in East Asia, situated in the Pacific Ocean to the east of the Asian continent. The Sea of Japan borders it to the west and stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south.
The country is made up of four main islands and over 14,000 smaller ones. Japan is divided into 47 prefectures and eight traditional regions, with around 75% of its land covered by mountains and forests. As a result, its population and agriculture are largely concentrated in the coastal lowlands, especially along the eastern side.
Human settlement in Japan dates back to the Upper Paleolithic era, approximately 36,000 years ago. By the 4th–6th centuries AD, the early Japanese kingdoms unified under an emperor, first based in Nara and later in Heian-kyō.
