Eye Of The Earth Croatia

The Cetina River Spring (Izvor Cetine), also known as the Eye Of The Earth is an incredible karst spring. It is located at the foothills of the Dinara mountain range in Croatia. The Eye Of The Earth in Croatia is named because it looks like a blue-green eye from above. This splendid spring is one of the sources of the longest river in Dalmatia- the Cetina river. It runs for about 104 kilometres, before reaching the Adriatic Sea. Its waters flow at the foot of the Dinara, the highest mountain massif in Croatia. The Eye of the Earth is off the main tourist routes, located in Milasevo, near a small village called Cetina. The Blue hole is located further downstream, near the oldest Croatian churches which date back to the 9th century. The Izvor Cetine is the coolest and most unique place in Croatia.

The recreational area here is lovely, where can swim well before taking a bath in the water source.

The Origin Of The Eye Of The Earth

The origin of the ‘Eye of the Earth’ is several kilometers away, in Mount Dinara (1,831 m). It is one of the main limestone mountain ranges in Europe. Over millions of years, the gorges were carved out by the force of water. Beneath Mount Dinara is underground rivers that flow through countless caverns in the subsoil before rising to the surface to form 3 twin crystal-clear lagoons- Vukovica Vrilo, Batica Vrilo, and Veliko Vrilo. The latter of these springs has a unique eyeball shape, which is clearly visible from the hills surrounding the lagoon, earning it the nickname ‘the eye of the Earth’. The exact depth is still unknown today but Speleological divers have reached a depth of 115 meters and were unable to go any deeper. The most common way to admire it is by kayak.

Carbonate rocks mainly calcareous and dolomite dissolve easily in rainwater or draining water, giving rise to karst landscapes, which manifest themselves in various forms, with caves, canyons, Dolines, and upwellings being some of the most spectacular examples. The water temperature in spring is 4 to 8 degrees Celsius. It is therefore very cold in spring.

Glavas springs are another name for the earth’s eye in Croatia. The water supply from this spring is the purest and largest and the highest mountain in Croatia, Mount Dinara, is where this Glavas spring is located. The eye of the earth emerges and is shaped like a small lake with crystal-clear water. Due to the water’s blue-colored hue, it has an eye-like shape. This spring continuously and ceaselessly spews water into a river known as the Cetina river. Cetina River, one of Europe’s cleanest springs, serves as the country’s most reliable source of drinking water. A popular activity there is rafting, which can be done in this area of swift water.
