The history of these caves dates back to the 6th century when they have been carved. It is believed that the five Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata lived here during their time in exile. Apart from the beaches, Goa is also well-known for housing relics of almost 300-year-old Portuguese architecture and is a perfect holiday destination.

The caves have five separate compartments, which is why this story gets more related to Pandavas. Out of 5 Compartments, Lingas were discovered in three compartments. Each of the three shrines has the linga carved with inscriptions and set on a Pitha, which is similar to those in the Ellora and Ajanta caves. The caves are excavated from a red laterite hill and continue to be visited by tourists and pilgrims. However, some scholars speculate that the Caves have a Buddhist origin since excavations made nearby revealed a large statue of Mahaveer Gautama Buddha which dates back to the 4th century. The presence of lingas in the caves, however, lends credence to the Brahmin origin theory, that many research says. These lingas are carved and inscribed in Sanskrit and the style of these carvings is attributed to the Bhoja period, dating back to the 7th century.
