Poyang lake mystery

Water in Poyang Lake Road begins to rise up with the arrival of the rainy season and this makes Poyang lake a mystery. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China and is located in the Poyang Lake National Park in the province of Jiangxi, in the southeast of China. It is also the world’s largest lake in terms of volume. Every year, part of China’s Yongwu Highway, which spans Poyang Lake, is submerged under water in the rainy season. It is also named the “Most Beautiful Road Under the Water.” you can see a bus navigating its way along the Dahuchi Highway, in the middle of Poyang Lake, before the highway is flooded, and below in the video some vehicles are passing after the road is underwater.

The Poyang Lake Road underwater is totally paved. It’s 29.9 km long and with the onset of the rainy season, water in the lake starts to rise up towards the end of May, every year. For the next few months, this road is no longer just above the surface but deep under the water. As the water level of the lake rises the road is gradually flooded. Although drivers can no longer see the road surface, they still drive across the road by keeping within the guard rails on either side. As the water level continues to rise, after a few days, the entire road is completely submerged. In Actual, it is one of the most periodically flooded roads around the world. It is part of the Yongwu highway in china. The people of China call it “the most beautiful road under the water”.

Poyang Lake China

Poyang lake located in Jiujiang is the largest freshwater lake in China. The lake is fed by the Gan, Xin, and Xiu rivers, which connect to the Yangtze through a channel. The area of Poyang Lake fluctuates dramatically between the wet and dry seasons. The Poyang Lake has a maximum length of 170 km from north to south and a maximum width of 17 km from east to west. The lake has an average depth of 8.4 m and reaches a maximum depth of 25.1 m. The entire region becomes an extensive marshland by seasonal water bodies and is marked with small hills topped by villages in the winter season. In the summer season, the whole area is flooded, and then these tiny hills serve as islands. In a normal year, the area of the lake averages 3,500 square kilometres and less than 1000 sq. km during the dry season.  In early 2012, drought, sand quarrying, and the practice of storing water at the Three Gorges Dam lowered the area of the lake to about 200 square kilometres.

Poyang Lake has also been called Pengli Lake historically, but they are not the same. Before the Han Dynasty, the Yangtze followed a more northerly course through what is now Longgan Lake. The area that is now Poyang Lake was a plain along the Gan River. Around 400 AD, the Yangtze River switched to a more southerly course, causing the Gan River to back up and form Lake Poyang. The backing up of the Gan River drowned Poyang County and Haihun County, forcing a mass migration to Wucheng Township in what is now Yongxiu County. Wucheng thus became one of the great ancient townships of Jiangxi Province.
