The Reiek Tlang: A cuesta formed hill station Overlooking The Plains of Mizoram

Gorgeous Reiek Tlang in Mizoram is a heritage village and the country’s hidden gem is known for its mountain vistas and traditional huts of the Mizo sub-tribes. About 29km from Aizawl, Reiek rests at an elevation of 1,548 meters overlooking the Aizawl city and the plains of the neighboring country of Bangladesh.

Tucked away in the northeast side of India, Reiek is so stunning that you’ll find it difficult to peel your eyes away from its views. It is blessed with nature’s beauty and the air is filled with a sense of great calm.

Geology

Reiek hill is a cuesta formed due to erosion of the tertiary sand shale alterations. Cuesta means a ridge with a gentle slope or dip on one side and a steep slope or scarp on the other. The folded structure of the Mizoram ranges is at the junction of two moving tectonic plates (Indian and Burma) and part of “Tertiary of Assam” in Indian Stratigraphy.

The Reiek Tlang (or Reiek Hill), surrounded by thick temperate trees and bushes. It gives travelers an opportunity to trek up the hill, with some exceptional views and diverse flora and fauna in the area. Climb up the cliff is quite steep, Golden grass and forests make the hike thrilling & interesting. Interestingly, there are caves that you can explore on your way.

Heritage village

Standing on the top of Reiek hill, Touristic can get a glimpse of the scenic landscape, mystic mountains, small valleys, and hills of Mizoram.  Reiek has a typical Mizo village consisting of the traditional huts of the different Mizo sub-tribes and Mizo chieftain’s house, that has been created and maintained Govt. of Mizoram.

The houses are fully furnished giving the touristic a peek into the glorious past of the highlanders. A cafeteria and a resort provide excellent food and accommodation facility. This is also the venue for the annual Anthurium festival and the best time to visit would be in April.  Reiek is and a half-hour drive from Aizawl.
