Geology

The earth pyramids are a geological peculiarity. These unusual structures started forming from moraine clay left behind after the last Ice Age when the glaciers melted away. The Ritten earth pyramids are a phenomenon caused by erosion. These features are appearing where ice age moraine loam from glaciers collected in the valleys. In dry conditions, the soil is hard as stone, but as soon as it rains, it turns into a soft muddy mass, starts sliding, and forms large slopes 10 to 15 meters steep.

The hard rocks in the mud underneath stay protected from the rain. So, while the surrounding material is continually carried off with the rain, the protected pillars rise out of the ground to form majestic earth pyramids. It can take hundreds to thousands of years to form these pyramids.

Ritten and Platten

The main reason for the formation of earth pyramids is the continuous alternation of periods of torrential rain and drought. These phenomena, in friable terrain, over the years, increasingly erode the ground and form such earth pyramids. This pyramids structure is formed in terrain, those very well sheltered from the wind so that they cannot be damaged.
