Sirpur refers to several ancient and historical sites in India. Sirpur is a village in Mahasamund district in the state of Chhattisgarh 35 km from Mahasamund city and 78 km away from Raipur on the banks of the river Mahanadi. This archaeological site is known for its rich cultural and historical significance, dating back to the 5th-8th centuries during the reign of the Shaiva and Vaishnava dynasties. The Buddha Viharas in Sirpur are older than Nalanda. The town of Sirpur has been mentioned in ancient epic, dating back to the 5th to the 8th centuries A.D. In old age, Sirpur was known as ‘Shripur’ and was the capital of South Kosal. The village hosts the Sirpur Group of Monuments consisting of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain temples and monasteries.

Sirpur has a tropical savanna climate. It is warm every month with both a wet and dry season. The average annual temperature for Sirpur is 33° degrees. After the hot summer sun, it starts to get cooler by the month of July and by August the rains cover the region completely. Stretching until the middle of October, the monsoon season has temperatures ranging from 29°C in the daytime to 20°C in the night; the climate gets very cool, and is a good time to visit.

Lakshmana Temple

Barnawapara wildlife sanctuary

Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its diverse flora and fauna and provides a habitat for various species of wildlife. The sanctuary is characterized by mixed deciduous forests with a variety of plant species. Sal, teak, bamboo, and other trees are found in the region.

The sanctuary is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, sloth bears, bison, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, and various species of birds. It’s a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers. Birdwatchers can enjoy spotting numerous bird species in the sanctuary, including parrots, mynas, bulbul, eagles, and more. Barnawapara has a Crocodile Rearing Center aimed at the conservation of crocodiles. It plays a role in the breeding and rehabilitation of crocodile species.

Sirpur waterfall

Dhaskund waterfalls are situated at a distance of 8 km from Sirpur in the dense forest of Borid village. The place is on the same road as Laxman temple. There is a small trek of 2km to reach the waterfall. The waterfall becomes very slow during summer. One can spend a good time in the lap of nature with your family and friends.

The distance between Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh, and Sirpur is approximately 84 kilometers by road. The travel time can vary depending on the mode of transportation and road conditions.
