‘Oravakallu rock garden’ the less explored beauties in Andhra Pradesh- Geotourism
Oravakallu rock garden is located in the district of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. As you enter this place, several unusual rock formations grab your attention. This hidden formation makes us wonder that who carved these rocks in this region. These rock formations are found in a village called Orvakal or Orvakallu in the outskirts of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. Though Orvakal is a small village, it is famous for its rock formations. Hence, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department has constructed a park around the Rock Garden.
Orvakallu is a natural landscape of rock formations around a long, meandering body of natural lake in the middle of the site that enhances the beauty of the place. The rocks are spread across an area of 50 acres adjacent to Kurnool – Nandyal highway. On reaching the highest point, visitors can see a breathtaking view of the water body that has wide open spaces and clear blue skies as its backdrop.
The beautiful structures and understanding the scientific reason behind such formations make us overwhelmed about nature. It feels like nothing can compete with nature’s creativity.
It is known for its igneous rock formations. If you have ever travelled on the NH-18 highway towards Kurnool, you can wonder to see these rock formations. The layered pattern of rocks indicates volcanic eruptions. Hence, it is suggested that they were created from volcanic lava. Silica and Quartz are the primary components found in these rocks.
Due to Millions of years of wind and water erosion, the rocks have chiselled the hillocks around Oravakallu, resulting in a beautiful array of shapes and formations. A section of the rock shelters has been designated as the Oravakallu Rock Garden, where pavements have been built for easy access.
The rock garden is a famous spot for rock climbing, bouldering and bird watching. Orvakal is not just a tourist place but also a famous film shooting spot. Several scenes from the recent super hit ‘Baahubali’ has been shot here. Tourists can also enjoy boating in the waters around the rock formations. A cave museum is also one of the main attractions at Orvakal. Interestingly, palaeolithic rock paintings are also found here. It has been an alluring factor for archaeologists for many years.
How to reach Oravakallu
The rock garden is approx 230 km from Hyderabad and 20 km from the Kurnool district headquarter. The garden is on the main road itself so easily accessible by public transport.
