Mauritius is 2,000 km off the southeast coast of Africa, The Island is 65 km long and 45 km wide. The island is surrounded by more than 150 km of white sandy beaches, lagoons and coral reefs. Some 49 uninhabited islands and islets lie just off the Mauritian coast, several of which have been declared natural reserves for endangered species. Mauritius is composed of nine district, some are Black River, Flacq, Grand Port, Moka and Port Louis.

Mauritius Island is a geologically young island, having been created by volcanic activity some 8 million years ago. Together with Saint Brandon, Reunion, and Rodrigues, the island is part of the Mascarene Islands. These islands formed as a result of gigantic underwater volcanic eruptions that happened thousands of kilometers to the east of the continental block made up of Africa and Madagascar. The volcanic activity in the region now rests under Reunion Island. Mauritius is encircled by a broken ring of mountain ranges, varying in height from 300 to 800 meters above sea level. The highest peak is in the southwest, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire at 828 meters. Streams and rivers flow through the island, many formed in the cracks created by lava flows.

Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius. It is mainly located in the Port Louis District, with a small portion in the Black River District. Port Louis is the country’s financial and political centre, and most populous city. The capital city’s main attractions is beautiful botanical gardens, colonial chateaus, bustling markets, and the sugar factory. Visitors can Climb up to Fort Adelaide, known as ‘The Citadel’, a 19th-century military fortress which features a walled courtyard and panoramic city views. The Grand Port Louise Bazaar & China Town are also worth visiting.

It hosts international flights to Europe, Asia and Africa. Mauritius Airport is located at Plaine Magnien, 48 kilometers southeast of Port Louis
