Itachuna Rajbari, A Heritage Jewel of Hooghly

Itachuna Rajbari

Itachuna is a village, and together with Khanyan, it forms the Itachuna-Khanyan Gram Panchayat in the Pandua CD Block of Chinsurah subdivision, Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. West Bengal is truly a land that bears witness to the rich legacy of the Zamindars, the feudal lords of the past. Their grandeur, royal lifestyle, and luxurious living are reflected in the magnificent mansions, or “Rajbaris,” that still stand today, some surviving the test of time. Many of these Rajbaris have now been converted into heritage properties, while the descendants of their original owners often live far away, sometimes in foreign lands. Interestingly, this very palace served as the shooting location for the Bollywood film Lootera, starring Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh.

Itachuna Rajbari History

Itachuna was also known as “Bargee Danga,” a name derived from the word “Bargee,” referring to the Marathi warriors who once raided Bengal to collect taxes centuries ago. Many of these warriors later settled in Bengal, flourished in trade, and became the Kundus of Bengal, originally Kundans from Maharashtra. According to the official website, Itachuna Rajbari was built by the ancestors of Shri Shafallya Narayan Kundu in 1766. The Rajbari spans 20 bighas of land, with the terrace alone covering 10 bighas. Upon our arrival, the office staff welcomed us and provided details about meal timings—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—as well as the various activities available during our stay. Prior bookings are mandatory for anyone planning to stay at the Rajbari.

Itachuna Rajbari was constructed in the late 18th century by the Kundan family, prominent landlords and traders of the time. The palace is an excellent example of Bengali architecture, incorporating elements of European design. Its historical significance and architectural beauty have made it a popular location for films and television productions.

The palace is so grand and majestic that people are awestruck at first sight. Everything looked like a scene from a historical movie, reflecting the luxurious life that these wealthy landlords once led.
