The site is said to have been created by a sculptor named Kallu Kumar, who was commanded by Lord Shiva to create one crore (ten million) statues of gods and goddesses. Kallu Kumar was only able to complete 99,99,999 statues before the deadline, and as a result, he turned himself into a stone statue as a punishment.

Unakoti Tripura is home to many rock-cut sculptures and carvings, including a giant 10-meter-high statue of Lord Shiva, known as Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava, which is the central attraction of the site. Other sculptures include those of Ganesha, Nandi Bull, and various other gods and goddesses. The Town is located on the banks of the river Juri and is home to several temples and historical sites, including the Kailashahar Palace, which was built by the former kings of Tripura.
