Heaven on Earth: Experience Railay Beach in Thailand
Railay beach
Railay also known as Rai Leh, is a picturesque peninsula situated between Krabi Town and Ao Nang in Thailand. Accessible only by boat due to the towering limestone cliffs that isolate it from the mainland, Railay has become a world-renowned destination for rock climbers. In addition to climbing, the area is celebrated for its pristine beaches and tranquil, laid-back atmosphere. Railay Beach is situated on a small peninsula known as Railay Bay. The only way to reach Railay Beach is by sea, with longtail boats and speedboats providing regular transportation for visitors from nearby beaches throughout the day.
The peninsula is divided into four main areas:
Phra Nang
Famous for the Phra Nang Cave, which houses a sacred shrine respected by local sailors. Inside the cave, visitors can admire stalactites that create a chandelier-like effect, framing a picturesque view of the cave’s mouth. This beach is also a fantastic location to watch the sunset.
West Railay
Offers a more upscale vibe with luxury resorts and breathtaking sunsets. It is enclosed by towering limestone cliffs, this area is perfect for swimming and is a popular spot to enjoy breathtaking sunsets.

East Railay
Features a lively boardwalk with shops and restaurants, catering to a mid-range budget. A haven for rock climbing enthusiasts, especially international visitors. At the far end of the beach, a limestone cliff provides the perfect height and challenge for climbers.
Ton Sai
A rustic haven popular with rock climbers and backpackers, offering a more casual and adventurous atmosphere.
Activities
Most visitors come to Railay to enjoy swimming in the serene, crystal-clear turquoise waters and to relax on the soft, powdery sand beaches. In addition to this, rock climbing is a highly popular activity here. Along the main street, we noticed several climbing shops, making it easy for climbers of all skill levels to participate without needing to bring their own equipment. To our surprise, many people were already scaling the vertical limestone cliffs, guided and assisted by experienced local instructors.
Accommodation options in Railay range from budget-friendly bungalows and mid-range resorts in East Railay to luxurious resorts in West Railay. Notably, the upscale Rayavadee Resort spans both the East and West Railay waterfronts and features a beachfront restaurant at Ao Phra Nang.
