Dras is a town in the Kargil District of the union territory of Ladakh in India. The Dras Valley is often referred to as the “Gateway to Ladakh” and is known for its stunning landscapes, including snow-capped mountains and the Dras River.

Dras is one of the coldest inhabited places in India and experiences extremely cold temperatures during winter, with heavy snowfall. The town gained significance due to its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC), which separates the Indian-administered territory of Jammu and Kashmir from the Pakistani-administered territory of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The region has historical significance as it was the site of the Kargil War in 1999 between India and Pakistan. The Dras War Memorial, built to honor the soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict, is a notable landmark in the area.

Drass is known for its extremely cold temperatures, especially during winter. The climate in Drass is classified as subarctic, with harsh winters and relatively short summers. Here’s a brief overview of the typical weather in Drass.

Winter (November to March)

Extremely cold temperatures. Heavy snowfall, leads to thick snow cover. Drass Temperatures can drop well below freezing, and it’s not uncommon for them to reach minus 20 degrees Celsius or even lower.

Spring (April to June)

Gradual warming up of temperatures. Snow begins to melt, revealing the lush green landscapes. Daytime temperatures may range from around 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, but nights can still be cold.

Summer (July to September)

Relatively mild temperatures during the day. Daytime temperatures can vary between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. This period is the best time to visit Dras when the weather is more hospitable.

Autumn (October)

Temperatures start to drop as winter approaches. The landscape begins to transition into autumn colors.

Due to its harsh winter conditions, with heavy snow and extremely low temperatures, travel to Drass during winter can be challenging. Summers are more suitable for visiting when the weather is milder, and the region is accessible. Keep in mind that weather conditions can vary, and it’s advisable to check current forecasts before planning a trip to Dras.

“Tiger of Drass”

The “Tiger of Drass” is a reference to the Kargil War hero, Captain Vikram Batra, who was often called by this nickname. Captain Batra was an officer in the Indian Army, and he played a crucial role during the Kargil War in 1999.

During the conflict, Captain Vikram Batra led his troops in the icy heights of the Dras sector, which is often referred to as the “Gateway to Ladakh.” He displayed exceptional bravery and leadership in capturing strategic enemy positions at a high altitude.

One of the most famous incidents associated with Captain Vikram Batra was during the capture of Point 5140, a critical peak in the Dras sector. He and his Delta Company were tasked with scaling the heights, and despite facing intense enemy fire, he led the assault and succeeded in capturing the peak. During the operation, he reportedly exclaimed the famous war cry, “Yeh dil maange more!” (“This heart wants more!”).

Unfortunately, Captain Vikram Batra lost his life during the war, but his courage and sacrifice earned him the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration for valor. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and he is remembered as a symbol of bravery and patriotism.

Draupadi Kund

A beautiful high-altitude lake associated with the Mahabharata. Offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Tololing

Site of intense fighting during the Kargil War. The view from Tololing Top provides a panoramic perspective of the region.

Mushko Valley

Known for its natural beauty and landscapes.  Offers trekking opportunities for adventure enthusiasts.

Bhimbat Glacier

A serene and less-explored area. The glacier is named after Bhim, one of the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata.

Gomchan Valley

Known for its lush greenery and vibrant landscapes. A great place for nature lovers and photographers.

Holy Trinity Church

A historic church built during the British era. Represents the Christian community in the region.

Dha Village located about 20 km from Dras, is a traditional Ladakhi village with stone houses and terraced fields.

Shingo River

Offers a peaceful environment and beautiful river views. A good spot for relaxation and picnics.

Stagsboo Drass

2 km before Drass proper there are images of carving on stone blocks representing Maitreya and Avalokiteshvare prominently.

How to Reach Dras Valley

Reaching Drass Valley involves travel to the Kargil district in the union territory of Ladakh in India. Dras is well-connected by road, and the nearest major town is Kargil.  The nearest airport to Dras is the Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, Ladakh. From Leh, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Dras. The airport is well-connected to major cities like Delhi by regular flights.

Drass is approximately 140 kilometers from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The journey takes around 4-5 hours by road. You can hire a taxi or take a bus from Srinagar to Dras. Dras is about 150 kilometers from Leh, the largest town in Ladakh. Regular buses operate between Srinagar and Leh, and Drass is en route.
