History

The history of Borra caves Andhra Pradesh dates back millions of years ago when the area was covered by the sea. Due to geological movements and the action of water, the limestone rocks in the area were eroded, and the caves were formed. The caves were discovered by a British geologist named William King George in 1807, who was on a survey mission in the region. The caves were named after a local tribal deity, Borraiah, who was believed to have lived in the caves.

The caves were initially used by the local tribes as a shelter and a place of worship. The Ghatikas, a community of local monks, later used the caves for meditation and religious practices. In the early 1900s, the caves were further explored by the French geologist G. M. Minali, who mapped the cave system and documented its unique features. The caves were later developed as tourist destinations, with pathways and lighting systems installed for visitors. Today, Borra caves in India are a popular tourist attraction, visited by thousands of people every year. The caves have also been declared a protected site by the Andhra Pradesh government, to preserve their unique geological and ecological features.

Borra Cave Geology

Borra caves in India is a natural cave formation located in the Ananthagiri Hills at an altitude of about 705 meters above sea level and is known for its unique geological features. The cave was formed millions of years ago due to the flow of the Gosthani River, which is a tributary of the Sarada River. Over time, the river eroded the limestone deposits and created a series of tunnels and chambers inside the hill.

The regional geology in the Eastern Ghats mobile belt, where the caves are located, is represented by the Khondalite suite of rocks of the Archaean age. Quaternary deposits consist of red bed sediments, laterites, pediment fans, colluvium, alluvium, and coastal sands. The carbonate rocks are pure white and coarsely crystalline and the deformed and banded marbles cover a triangular area of two km2 surrounded by diopside–scapolite–feldspar calc-granulites.
