Amazing Checkerboard Mesa: Nature’s Perfect Stone Grid Marvel

Checkerboard Mesa, Utah

Checkerboard Mesa is a well-known peak exceeding 1,990 meters in elevation, composed of Navajo Sandstone, and situated in Zion National Park, Utah, USA. Located just southwest of the park’s east entrance, it rises approximately 270 meters above the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway. The nearest neighboring formation, Crazy Quilt Mesa, lies about half a mile to the west, separated by Checkerboard Mesa Canyon. This canyon collects rainwater in small pools, providing a crucial water source for the area’s bighorn sheep.

The name comes from the cliff’s distinctive grid-like pattern of intersecting lines etched into the white cross-bedded sandstone, creating the appearance of a checkerboard. The horizontal lines are the result of cross-bedding, a leftover feature from ancient dunes. The vertical and near-vertical lines developed as the sandstone expanded and contracted due to temperature changes, freeze–thaw cycles, and repeated wetting and drying. Rainwater runoff from the mountain flows into tributaries of the Virgin River.

Utah State Route 9 runs directly through the center of Zion National Park, covering about 12 miles from the south entrance to the east entrance. After entering from the south, the road passes the visitor center and the Zion Human History Museum, then follows the Virgin River. It eventually reaches Zion Canyon Road. From there, the highway climbs more than 1,000 feet via a series of switchbacks, with several scenic pullouts along the way for photos. At the top of the canyon, the road enters the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel.

The tunnel stretches just over a mile and cuts through solid sandstone, emerging near a parking area that provides access to two popular trailheads-

The Canyon Overlook Trail is a short, one-mile round-trip hike leading to a cliffside viewpoint overlooking the winding road below and offering breathtaking views of Zion Canyon. The second trailhead leads to Pine Creek, a technical slot canyon that requires advanced canyoneering skills, proper equipment, and a permit.
