Midway Geyser Basin contains a small Part of mammoth-sized Hot springs. Midway is part of the Lower Geyser Basin, but because of its isolated location between the main features of Lower and Upper geyser basins, it became known as Midway. it stretches along a mile of the famous Firehole River. Despite its small size Midway consists of two of the largest hot springs in the world. Grand Prismatic Spring, nearly 112 m. in diameter, sits upon a large mound surrounded by small step-like terraces. The other one is the Excelsior Geyser, which erupted nearly 91 m. high before the 1900s. It is now a dormant geyser and is considered a hot spring, discharging more than 4050 gallons of boiling water per minute. Other colorful springs include Turquoise and Opal springs, known for their pale and dark blue colors.
Across the Firehole River from Excelsior and Grand Prismatic springs are a series of small isolated, pristine springs and mud pots. The Rabbit Creek drainage possesses some colorful and unusual features and most are unnamed. Grand Prismatic is the Main attraction and largest hot spring in Yellowstone and is considered to be the third-largest in the world. it sits upon a wide, spreading mound where water flows evenly on all sides forming a series of small, stair-step terraces.

This is a huge oval pool of 112 m. across and 36 m. deep that is surrounded by unusually colorful bands of algae and travertine terraces, with wavy run-off channels, giving the appearance, from above, of a giant blue star. The pool constantly bubbles and steams, forming clouds of hot mist that blow around in the area. A half-mile boardwalk trail runs partway around the spring, past two pools Opal and Turquoise.
What Causes Geysers to Erupt?

The hot spring has bright bands of orange, yellow, and green that ring the deep blue waters in the spring and show a rainbow color appearance. The colors found across the hydrothermal features at Midway Geyser Basin are created by thermophiles, microorganisms that love the heat. Thermophiles change color depending on the temperature of the water they are in. These extreme organisms live in water once thought to be too hot to support life.
