The Basaltic Prisms of Santa Maria Regla are tall columnar joints of basalt rock near Huasca de Ocampo in the Mexican state of Hidalgo. The canyon walls, known as Barranca de Santa Maria Regla, are lined by polygonal columns between 30 and 50 meters high, with five or six sides each. It is so amazing that looks precisely cut by a giant hand. The basalt columns were created by the slow cooling of volcanic lava. The natural canyon has been modified by the addition of stairs, walkways, and hanging bridges for easier access. The Prussian explorer Baron Alexander von Humboldt, A geographer first to promote the waterfall and rock formations. The landmark’s extraordinary polygonal shapes have drawn comparisons to California’s Devil’s Postpile and Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway.

How Basaltic Prisms Mexico forms

These Basaltic Prisms of Santa Maria Regla are made of igneous rock, known as prismatic basalt. These basaltic prisms were formed by the accelerated cooling of lava millions of years ago. They are at the waterfall formed by the San Antonio Dam, which falls through the prisms and into the river. This geologic phenomenon is unique in the whole continent. Baron Alexander Von Humboldt considered the father of modern geography, visited Mexico at the beginning of the 19th century and was impressed by the beauty of these prisms.

Prismas Basalticos Waterfall is one of the 13 natural wonders of Mexico. This spectacular landmark features numerous geometric basalt columns formed over thousands of years by cooling volcanic lava. Waterfalls drop elegantly over the columns, which range from 30 meters to 50 meters in height.

El Chico National Park

El Chico National Park is nestled in the highlands above the historic mining city of Pachuca near the Basaltic prism of Mexico. It is a sprawling forest and mountain reserve that is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Visitors can trek among the emerald sea of conifers, see rivers and waterfalls, climb up to panoramic steep cliffs, camp out under the stars and look for endemic Mexican wildlife species. Rocky spires, bluffs, and craggy peaks make the Sierra Pachuca, a great destination for rock climbers. El Cedral, a basin of the Panuco River, is ideal for fishing and camping. Drive to the lookout point on Pena del Cuervo, which rises 75 meters above the valley floor. El Chico National Park is one of the oldest reserves in Mexico 23 kilometers outside of Pachuca.

Monumental Clock of Pachuca

The Monumental Clock of Pachuca is the focal point of central Independence Square. The clock’s four faces point directly north, east, south and west, so the tower is a good starting point for your explorations of Pachuca. The tower stands 40 meters tall and was inaugurated in 1910. Walk around the tower to see its four clock faces, adorned by eagles.

Tuzoofari Zoo

Tuzoofari Zoo is famous for its wild creatures. See big cats, jungle species, reptiles, and multicolored tropical birds, among many species. Tuzoofari Zoo spreads across an area of about 150 acres with a backdrop of rugged mountain countryside. The park accommodates about 1,000 animals that represent over 200 species. Cheetahs, lions, and tigers in addition to giraffes, water buffalo, and zebras are worth seeing. Located on the outskirts of the town of Epazoyucan, the zoo is 26 kilometers southeast of Pachuca and very near to Basaltic prism Mexico.

Things to do in Basaltic Prisms Mexico

Santa Maria Regla retains many of its natural features. It is like a huge stone maze, where one can spend quality time walking through and admiring gardens, bridges, arches, stairways, old smelting furnaces, and even a pond. The area near the Basaltic prism is surrounded by a large wooded area and lush trees full of moss. There is also a waterfall that falls over the canyon.

A series of hanging bridges, observation decks, pathways, and staircases offer spectacular views of the waterfall. from here one can observe the columns from both above and below. Visit areas that allow you to stand on the columns and walk across stones embedded into the river beneath the cascade. Look for the rainbows created when the sun’s rays reflect in the waterfall.

Take part in the adventure activities available in the area, such as a thrilling zip-line course. Ride on horseback amid the pristine forests of the surrounding countryside. Learn about local mythology on a guided boat tour of the nearby San Antonio Dam. A children’s playground, sports courts, and swimming pool are other activities.
