The Dooars or Duars are the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in North-East India. Duar means door and the region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. The Dooars region constitutes the plains of the Darjeeling Himalayas, the whole of the Jalpaiguri district, and the Alipurduar district. The maximum elevation of the Dooars area is 1,750 m. with innumerable streams and rivers flowing through these fertile plains from the mountains of Bhutan. The main drainage is Teesta among many others like the Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa, Sankosh, Dyna, and Raidak. There are 18 gateways through which the Bhutanese people can communicate with the people living in the plains area. This region is divided by the Sankosh River into the Eastern and Western Dooars. The Western Dooars are known as the Bengal Dooars and the Eastern Dooars as the Assam Dooars.

Geography

The Dooars or Duars are the alluvial floodplains in eastern-northeastern India that lie south of the outer foothills of the Himalayas and north of the Brahmaputra River basin. This region is about 30 km wide and stretches over about 350 km from the Teesta River in West Bengal to the Dhansiri River in Assam. The region forms the gateway to Bhutan and part of the Terai-Duar savanna and grasslands ecoregion. The Dooars West Bengal constitutes the plains of Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar districts and the upper region of Cooch Behar district in WB, and the districts of Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon in the state of Assam. Dooars weather

Monsoon in Dooars west Bengal generally starts in the middle of June and continues till the end of September. Winters are cold with foggy mornings and nights. Summer is mild and constitutes a very short period of the year. Monsoon generally starts in the middle of May and continues till the end of September. Dooars is the ideal place in Bengal for monsoon traveling. The average rainfall of the area is about 3,400 mm.

The  Dooars area is dotted by several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries which attract a lot of tourists from all around the world, making it an important contributor to the economy. The timber industry growing in this region- A number of sawmills and plywood industries established in this area. Dooars near Bhutan; thus, the export-import industry also flourishes in the area.

Gorumara National Park and Safari

Gorumara National Park is situated just at the foothills of Eastern Himalaya in the Terai region. Jaldhaka a tributary of Brahmaputra flows just beside the National Park. Gorumara has mixed vegetation of forest and grassland. It is especially famous for its One Horned Indian Rhino. Gorumara was declared a National Park in 1994. Gorumara National Park is spread over an area of approx 80 sq km. Gorumara is famous for its jungle safari. Sighting of wildlife such as Elephants, Rhinos, Indian Bison, Peacocks, and Deer are the most common sightings. The forest safari is organized in special vehicles meant by the forest department.

Chukchuki bird-watching point  

Chukchuki Watch Tower is situated extreme border of the Gorumara National Park and is the perfect vantage point for viewing hundreds of birds. This spot of the Park provides clear views of the many migratory birds who often visit seasonally. Sitting of the Indian national bird Peacock is very common here.

Rocky island

Rocky Island is situated on the banks of the River Murti. It is about 2 km from Samsing and is a popular camping site. Camping Dooars-The view of the river and surrounding forests are excellent from small Tents accommodation. The campsite provides an excellent opportunity to explore the interior parts of Neora Valley National sanctuary. This place is best for adventurous activities like trekking, and rock climbing. A small enjoyable trek to nearby spots like Sherpagaon, Bhalukope, Jhandidara, and Mo-Chuki is an added attraction of this place. The road to Rocky Island is full of pebbles and it ends at the bridge near Murti.

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is known for Dooars sightseeing. It is the habitat of the rare one-horned rhinoceros, the bison, the leopard, spotted deer, sambar, hog deer, reptiles, huge wild tuskers, wild boars, and the rarest variety of birds. Elephant riding through the Jaldapara forest in search of wild animals is especially the best thing to do.

Buxa Fort

Buxa Fort is famous for the ruins of the Detention Camp used by the British Government for detaining freedom fighters. It is located at an altitude of 867 meters in the Buxa Tiger Reserve, about 30 km from Alipurduar town and about 18 km from Rajabhatkhawa. From Rajabhatkhawa, to reach Buxa Fort visitors need to enter the forest and drive for about 14 km to reach Suntalabari. From here a trek of about 4 km will take you to the fort. A number of treks also originate at Buxa fort.

Jayanti River

Jayanti is a small forest village within the Buxa Tiger Reserve. The river is popular with hikers for its beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and wild fountains. A picturesque place along the meandering Jayanti River is an ideal place to relax in the midst of nature. This off-beat destination is popular as an eco-tourism hot spot.

Murti

Murti is a picturesque Dooars tourist place located on the banks of the Murti River. Spending a few days in knee-deep snaking Murti River is a perfect break. It is also a great place for nature lovers and bird watchers. One can also take a dip in the crystal clear waters of the Murti River. Camping is the most popular activity in Murti along with hiking.

Malbazar

Malbazar is one of the most important towns in Dooars. If you are planning to visit Eastern Dooars, Gorumara National Park, Chapramari Wild Life Sanctuary, Jhalong, Bindu, Samsing, and Suntalekhola; Malbazar is the best place to make your base. Kumlai is a famous picnic spot in Malbazar. The Siliguri – Alipurduar broad gauge inter-city express passes through Malbazar. This is one of the most beautiful train rides anywhere in India. The train passes through some of the best forests in the region.
