Telhar waterfall is a popular waterfall that’s located in the Kaimur district in Bihar. The waterfall is on the Rohtas plateau which is in close proximity to the Durgavati River on Bhabua. The waterfall is around 32kms from the Bhabua town and around 47 km from the Mohania. There are various attractions near the fall including the Maa Mundeshwari Temple which is located 28 km from it. This is one of the oldest and most prominent temples. Telhar waterfall also has a Dam named Karamchat located near it. It’s surrounded by amazing views on all sides and is perfect for a picnic with family and friends. This deep spring of waterfalls is worth seeing the sight. Telhar waterfall ends in the Telhar Kund which is situated at the bottom of the fall and is a popular spot for tourists to come and take a dip.

Telhar waterfall is as high as 80 m, and this fact is reason enough to be a thrill for the beholder. Telhar waterfall is enclosed by green, picturesque hills and a forest.  The journey to the waterfalls consists of twists and turns on the hilly road, which makes the trip enjoyable and adventurous. There are no refreshment shops or a market in and around the place, visitors are advised to carry food and drinking water to the waterfalls.

The Geology around the Telhar waterfall

The area around Telhar waterfall is comprised of two distinct groups of geological formations-The Pre-Vindhyan meta-sediments and volcano-sedimentary sequence of early Proterozoic known as Mahakoshal group of rocks consisting of phyllite, quartzites, schists, and marble and banded iron formation, Occupying a large part of the area. The Semri and Kaimur group of the Vindhyan supergroup is conspicuously exposed in the northern part of the area. The Semri group (Lower Vindhyan) of rocks consists of limestones, shales, and glauconite beds. The Kaimur group of rocks (Upper Vmdhyans) consisting mainly of quartzite, sandstone, and shale form conspicuous by high relief in the extreme north of the area. The sandstone bedding easily can be seen in the Telhar waterfall plunging area.

The Kaimur wildlife sanctuary is Spread over an area of 1342 square km. The wildlife sanctuary is home to many wild and endangered animals. The forest reserves are home to Royal Bengal tigers, and some other animals like chitals, Indian boars, Indian leopards, Sambar deer, Sloth bear, antelopes, and nilgais. Apart from wild animals, the forest is also famous for being the home to a number of beautiful birds. Birds spotted in Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary are Drongo, Blue Jay, Paradise Flycatcher, Greater Spotted Eagle, Quail, Grey Partridge, and White-Tailed Eagle.

Karmanasa River

Karmanasa River is one of the most beautiful rivers in Bihar.  it is the tributaries of the river Ganga and flows through the Kaimur district of Bihar and through Uttar Pradesh. There is a unique belief behind the name of this river. Karmanasa” means- “The destroyer of religious merits.” It is believed that when sage Vishvamitra decided to create a new universe, he created a person named “Trishanku.” But while sending Trishanku to the new universe as its ruler, Indra stopped Vishvamitra in his creation. Trishanku was suspended in mid-air, and from his saliva, the river Karmanasa was created. The river originates in the Kaimur range at an altitude of 1,150 feet.

How to reach Telhar waterfall

Kaimur can be reached by taking a flight to the nearest airport, Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur in Varanasi. From here, you can hire a cab to Kaimur. if coming by train, Bhabua Road Railway Station is the nearest railhead on the Gaya–Mughalsarai section. Visitors can take the NH-30 to reach the Kaimur district. If you wish to make a memorable visit to Telhar waterfall and Telhar Kund, plan a trip during the monsoon from June to September. The spot offers an Ideal experience in winters as well.
